By my buddy whom I always seek advice from when I run out of good makan places. She started this blog early this year and had already posted 40 (considered good as compared to me hahaha) comprehensive food reviews. The places she covers range from fine dining to hawker center, cuisine comprising of indian, japanese, brazilian, and many more… so be sure that you’ll be able to find something that suits you =)

Wild Rocket @ Mount Emily

May 4, 2008 – 1:36 pm | 3 Comments »

Wootz, great dining place to recommend. For those who never been there, the place opens from 1200 to 1500 and 1830 to 2300

Why is it recommended:
Apart from the good food, the ambience of this place is fantastic for dates. A pity is that the garden outside the restaurant was undergoing some renovation during my trip there, so the ambience wasn’t “perfect”.

What to try:
I personally love the Crabmeat Linguine, it tastes much better than the one at Menotti and Canele. The strawberry cheesecake is also a must try - it’s just not the typical cheesecake you eat elsewhere. The duck leg is not too bad, but I seriously think that it tastes like the pork knuckle at Stewhaus hahaha

What to take note:
Either you drive or take a cab there. I made a mistake by walking there from Cathay and was complained at throughout the trip =(

A perfect trip will be:
Dinner at Wild Rockets, Drinks at Wild Oats bar just beside Wild Rockets, Stroll down from Mount Emily… I missed out the last two steps sigh… so wish that I will be given a 2nd chance..

map.jpg

The Address: Hangout Hotel, 10A Upper Wilkie Road
The Number: 63399448 (advise to do a booking especially for dinner)
The Website: http://www.wildrocket.com.sg (advise to do some reading to impress your date, the owner is a former lawyer and a self-taught chef)

Ok! Hope that the mistakes I had made could help you plan for a perfect date, all the best to those guys reading this now hehe.

For those who have tried out Wild Oats bar, do give me some feedback, I might want to go back myself some time in future.

Prawning at Lakeside Fishing Village

April 28, 2008 – 2:41 am | 5 Comments »

Wootz~ The long waited prawning trip with long time sec frens aka close buddies aka only frens hahaha.

Attendees: Zijia, Tess, Toto, Shengwang, Jane and Me
Equipment: None (Mistake, explanations below)
Food: Three packs of tidbits, 2 bottles of mineral water, one pack of dried plums

S$26 for 3 hours per rod is not cheap, but I guess the quality of the time spent with frens cannot be measured by $$$ hehehe. We caught a total of 12 prawns in 3 hours!!! Shengwang and Jane caught about 8, Jia caught 2 I think and I caught 2 too. The first catch belongs to SW the hengkia hahaha

sw.JPG

Followed by Jane and Jia, forgotten the order…

jane.JPG

jia.JPG

Stupid Jia din send me the photo with his face… I was the last… sigh… and my first catch is totally not worth mentioning… the prawn is sooooo tiny…

me-1.JPG

My 2nd catch was much better. Look at the grin on my face hahaha… gotta seriously work on dat double chin man…

me-2.JPG

After 3 hours of prawning, we decided to bbq the prawns and finish them on the spot. We were provided with a free bbq pit and charcoals. Shengwang and Jane had to drive out to get the wire mesh and tongs.

bbq-1.JPG

So much work for 12 prawns hahaha… I guess it’s the experience and company that counts =)

bbq-2.JPG

Finally, feasting time…

feast.JPG

12 prawns was definitely not enough to fill our stomachs, we ordered other dishes like satay, and some zichar stuffs from the kopitiam there. The zichar food was crap, the satays were acceptable. A kind advice for those who are going, it’s better to prepare food for bbq-ing.

After the trip, I went online to find some tips on prawning. Happened to chance upon this site which gives pretty good advice - http://www.sharpion.per.sg/blog/2006/04/prawn-fishing-what-prawn-fishing-prawn.html

Ok, planning to test out the tips I read on 9 May. Any khakis? Jia? SW?

When it comes to courtship…

April 27, 2008 – 5:58 pm | 2 Comments »

Hahaha I seldom blog about such things, be sure that it’s going to be interesting hahaha… at least up to the first paragraph =P

Was chatting with someone and got to know some interesting traits about myself when I am in a courtship in the past:
1) I tend to be over eager, imposing unnecessary stress on the other party
2) I have the tendency to say about the things I did in the courtship to the other party *very very undesirable…*

Actually, I kinda realized them some time back but they are always obvious only until a 3rd party points them out… which by then, might have oredi been too late… Anyway, I strongly believe that these traits are derived or somehow influenced by the way I act in other areas…

I am working on point 2. I really think it’s a very unbecoming trait. As my fren, if you see that I am, in anyway, behaving like this in future, please remind me. I seriously want to kick off this habit.

For point 1, I think it relates to my ability to control my emotions. I won’t say I am lousy in controlling emotions. It depends on the subject matter, and it’s poor when it comes to the r/s between a man and a woman. I tend to be less objective in such situations, which will lead to immature acts… I guess much time and much discipline is needed…

The discussion with my fren led to two interesting solutions: 1) Either I work harder to manage my emotions in this area, or 2) I’ll be the passive party. Option 2 doesn’t seem to be a long term solution, haizzz…

Like the Zen Master says: We shall see…

Question: Does it imply that I have low EQ?

Having Strong Principles and Keeping an Open Mind

April 22, 2008 – 1:51 am | No Comments »

Apologies for not blogging for a while. A quick summary on what happened in the past few months: Almost drowned by shit loads of work, survived somehow, but faced with more mental and emotional challenges which kept me down for a period of time, and through relentless efforts to get myself out of this shit hole, I am finally able to step up to face the world again~~~ Hi World!

hahahahahaha ok lah, not so kua zhang, maybe just 10% of it (but 100% for the shit loads of work) =P

I’ve been through a lot of thinking about the differences between “Having Strong Principles” and “Keeping an Open Mind”. Can they exist together or are they mutually exclusive?

I used to see myself as a person with strong principles and to a certain extent, stubborn at times. Many months back, I told myself that I have to learn to keep an open mind and not to “repel” any thing that does not seem align with my principles on first sight. And today, I am a little bit lost. To me, every opinions I hear make sense, and I do not have an opinion of my own just because I think all of them are right…

I’ll like to use an analogy of a thick steel rod and a thin solder wire (for those who don’t know, they break easily after a few bendings). A thick steel rod is not flexible, but it’s reliable and does not break easily whereas the solder wire is just the opposite, flexible but easily broken.

From my perspective, finding a balance between the both is possible, but not easy. I believed my problem is that I tried too hard… like the chinese saying - 遇速则不达.

Do let me know if you hold other views, or any advice you may have for me, I am very open now, remember? hehehe =P

To advance is to slow down…

February 24, 2008 – 1:23 am | 4 Comments »

It’s been 15 months since I started work and almost everyday has been clearing backlogs, rushing to clear project reviews, improving operational procedures etc etc… din have time to really sit down and reflect on the things I’d done, things I’d learnt and things I could have learnt.

It’s exactly how I felt 2 years back when I was in Shanghai… felt so saturated after 9 months of hectic work… ideas stopped coming, dynamism dropped, confidence dropped… took me some time to get back to normal self.

Guess it’s time to take a break and reflect on the past 15 months before the next peak comes =)

Weeks of preparations and finally…

February 15, 2008 – 8:47 pm | No Comments »

After so many weeks of preparation, everything will be put to test next week… keeping my fingers cross and hope that everything will go smoothly next week hahaha =D

And I would like to thank Hendry for giving me a new perspective today. I admit and I accept that I’m still immature in handling some stuffs. I’ll learn and grow from all these mistakes I had made… hoping that there’ll be another chance =)

And I would like to apologise to Edwin for over-reacting… to certain issues… sorry sorry… but still… I’ll like to comment that the way you communicate… is not very friendly… it’s not only dis period that I felt this way… either I learn to accept it or you slightly change the way you communicate or we can do it both ways, we can definitely reach a compromise somewhere =)

Happy Chinese New Year!!!

February 10, 2008 – 2:27 am | 1 Comment »

Cheerioss!!! It’s ang bao harvesting time again muahahahahahaha!!! So bad of me to still say such things when I am oredi 27 and working wahahahaha =P

The way I spent this CNY is no different from the previous year - blackjack, mahjong, movies with cousins, traveling b/w east and west… and believe me, I have really really cut down a lot on the gambling part. It’s really a mental draining exercise for an old man like me hahahahaha =D

I am looking forward to a lot more things this year =) According to some fortune teller, I am supposed to be lucky from this year onwards hahahahahaha I just hope that the luck doesn’t just lie on the career part =P

Just returned from a hot pot session in one of my recently wed best friend’s new house (shengwang and jane). Always so happy to meet up with old friends, especially when we get to suan each other again and again muahahahaha =D We had a fun time with Wii too!!! I love the tennis game man, if I ever have the time to play console games at home, I’ll definitely buy one =(

Ok, nuff said about CNY, I’ll like to whine a little before I publish this post. It has been a stressful period recently… and I dislike it when politics (not office politics…) are involved amidst these huge piles of work. It’s quite a turn-off when there’s a need to put up with crappy project just because some kind of “illicit” relationship. I bet Jon would agree with me, such things should never happen, esp when it impedes the progress of “real” work. Sucks!!! *Takes a deep breath* Ok, I hope my EQ will improve after all these !#$%^&* =P

Yeah! Looking forward to tomorrow… hope that someone will be free hahaha =D

Things I learnt over the past few weeks

February 1, 2008 – 1:50 am | 5 Comments »

Have been doing a lot a lot of readings and research in the past few weeks. Going to show off a little on what I’ve learnt =P

Voice Recognition Technology
Most of the existing voice recognition technologies require speaker to “train” the system before it can be used. For example, the voice tags feature on our handphones requires us to record our voice before we can use the voice command. The problem with this technology is that it’s speaker dependent. Once the voice recognition system is trained, it’s only catered for that specific speaker, no one else.

Now, a lot of research is ongoing to develop a robust speaker independent system. Anyone can use it, and it doesn’t need to be trained. One of the methods being researched  is phoneme recognition. Phoneme is the smallest unit of sound. For example, the word “ship” - it has two phonemes, “sh” and “p”. A phoneme is pronounced without using voice. Try putting your fingers on your throat and pronounce “sh”, then try pronouncing “ship”, feel the difference? When pronouncing a phoneme, there should not be any vibration at the throat region.

Since phonemes are pronounced without voice, most of them are speaker independent. There may still be some variations in pronouncing phonemes between speakers from different parts of the world, but generally, they are the same. So, by recognising phonemes, the system can be speaker independent.

However, researches are not just performing phoneme recognition, they are also trying multi-phonemes recognition. Reason is because the pronounciation of “ph” and “f” are almost the same, so in order to differentiate between the two, the system strings up a few phonemes and make the most sensible word out of it. So you’ll get “funny” instead of “phunny”.

The problem with speaker independent voice recognition system is that it requires high processing power. This translates into high cost and therefore not really cost efficient to implement it in consumer products yet. However, as the technologies continue to evolve, it will not be long before we start telling our laptop to switch on itself =)

I did not anticipate to write so much for just one sharing topic. Ok, shall leave the other topics for subsequent posts.

Sidenote: Something came upon me recently… and I am starting to feel “dumb” again… =) It’s been a long time since the clumsiness visited me hahaha
